"The world is in a constant conspiracy against the brave. It's the age-old struggle: the roar of the crowd on the one side, and the voice of your conscience on the other." ~Douglas MacArthur
Korean War (1950~?)
The Korean War began on Sunday, June 25, 1950 and a ceasefire was called on Monday, July 27, 1953. However, this war didn't end with any type of document, so even now it is waging on the borders of the 38th parallel.
Deriving from the Cold War, America and Russia was using Korea without getting themselves into an actual fight. Why did the United States pick a fight with Korea? There are 3 simple reasons. To begin with, one is the "domino theory"- a concept that if one state came under Communism, the surrounding countries and nations would also gradually fall under the lure of Communism. Fearing that Japan would become Communist following China, Truman wanted to salvage Korea.
Another of President Truman's fears was that Communism was mowing over freedom, capitalism, and basically the American way of life. Truman figured that he should drive the Communists from North Korea, and contain the spread of Communism. However, Douglas MacArthur wanted to use forces from Formosa, currently known as Taiwan, in the Korean War. However, using the Chinese Nationalist forces would cause a change in the treaties that President Truman had established. Due to MacArthur's rash reaction that might lead to a Third World War, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Truman decided to replace General MacArthur with General Matthew Ridgeway.
In 1953, there was a battle at Pork Chop Hill, a Korean War infantry battle. There were two battles, the first in April and the second in July. It started on March 23rd, 1953 when the 141st Division took an outpost close to the hill called "Old Baldy". After a three-sided attack, the 31st regiment manned Pork Chop Hill, though a barrage of artillery led to the hill being overrun. In the second battle in July 6th, there was a repeat attack by the Communist Chinese, once more, under the cover of moonlight. The 17th infantry now held the hill. Out of the thirteen U.S. company commanders, four were killed. 347 people total died, with 373 wounded in battle on the United States side. Korea had a total of 15 dead, while Chinese took the most powerful hit with approximately 1,500 dead and 4,000 wounded.
